Google is seeking to patent a Web advertising placement system tentatively known as “Google Automat” that could directly impact the $100 billion annual global classified advertising business, according to Classified Intelligence.
Classified Intelligence breaks the news that Google is seeking out a patent for classified advertising placements that could mix it up in the billion dollar classified industry.
Google executives would not comment to CI about plans for Google Automat, but the patent applications reviewed by CI noted existing online ad placement programs are difficult. “Placing creatives and advertisements online for access by the general Web community can be especially problematic for individual or small advertisers,” one filing states.
The filing describes Automat as providing on-line user-assisted Web-based advertising. Automat is said to look similar to AdWords as it appears on the right hand side of the search results page, but can create a free-standing web page to serve as the product description.
